The Countess of Dysart was a title held by several women throughout history. The most notable Countess of Dysart was Elizabeth Murray, who was born in 1626 and later became the wife of Sir Lionel Tollemache. After Sir Lionel's death, Elizabeth married Sir John Maitland, who was eventually made the Earl of Lauderdale.
Elizabeth was known as a prominent courtier during the reign of King Charles II and was a close friend of the King's mistress, Barbara Villiers. She was also known for her intelligence and wit, and was a well-respected member of the royal court.
In addition to her social and political influence, Elizabeth was also a patron of the arts, particularly music. She supported many musicians and composers, including George Frideric Handel.
The title of Countess of Dysart continues to exist today, and is currently held by a member of the Scottish nobility.
